Citizens of Clayton take pride in their town’s rich history. Founded in 1857 and incorporated in 1964, Clayton’s Old West heritage is in tact in the well-preserved historic town center, where several original building still stand. Some, like the DeMartini, have been renovated to show their original splendor. While the town boasts new building like the Middle School and Community Library, new structures are designed to keep the integrity of the town’s original design intact. The Clayton Historical Museum and the city’s original City Hall are among the other buildings still standing from the town’s beginnings. The committee in charge of renovating and maintaining these buildings has been awarded the Governor’s Historic Preservation Award and the California Preservation Foundation Design Award for Historic Preservation.
